In spring I think the first thing most of us think about is flowers.  Flowers are one of my favorite subjects to photography in spring. New life springing up everywhere, beautiful fruit trees in bloom as well as all the first flowers to arrive, such as tulips, daffodils and hyacinth.

The Beautiful and Graceful White Tailed Deer

Source: sgbrown - Rockcreek Photography

I have always wanted to live out in the country. I was so happy when we were able to move out on 40 acres of woods and meadows. One of my favorite things about living in the country is being able to view the wildlife.  I love taking wildlife photography and the white tailed deer are one of my favorite subjects to photograph. I really enjoy watching the deer that come through our place. White tailed deer are the smallest members of the North American deer family and we have lots of deer where we live now.  They get their name from the white underside of their tail, which they will raise and “wag” as a warning to the other deer. Learn more about the beautiful and graceful white tailed deer. Read more ...

Just Wandering Around Taking Pictures

Male Cardinal
Source: sgbrown-Rockcreek Photography

This is a beautiful male cardinal. This good-looking little guy was perched outside, waiting his turn at my bird feeder.  He just caught my eye, he is so bright red!  I probably took 20 pictures of him while he was flitting around on that tree.  This is the best one.

Tufted Titmouse

This perky little guy is a Tufted Titmouse. They are common in Oklahoma and really common around my bird feeder.  He and the cardinal above, try to run each other off from the bird feeder outside my window.  The cardinal usually wins.

Fox-Tail Squirrel

This little fuzzy tailed squirrel was just waiting for me to leave, so he could scare off all the birds and have the sunflower seeds to himself.  The funny thing is, he has to get them off the ground, as Johnny fixed the bird feeder so the squirrels can't get on it!

White Tailed Deer

This is a beautiful white-tailed deer.  These are three doe, females.  These three girls were on their way to the pond, just behind them, when I came along. They were frightened at first, but once I got very still, they we not as afraid and went on their way.

Who Is In Control of What Your Children Eat?

Public Domain Pictures

I guess this is a bit of a rant, but I have seen so many articles in the news and papers, online, etc., that are talking about the problem of childhood obesity.  Then I stand in line at the store and see little kids that are extremely over weight.  When I look in the parents grocery cart, what do I see?  Corn dogs, frozen pizza, frozen french-fries.  No fruit, no vegetables, but a lot of convenience foods. Now, I am driving back home and the drive-thru at the pizza place as well as two “burger” places, are backed up beyond belief! What’s wrong with this picture!

A Short Story About a Dog Named Jake

Our Black Lab, Jake

I have always been an animal lover. My first pet was a little stray kitten that came to our door during a rain.  If I see a stray dog on the road and I think someone has abandoned it, I will stop, put it in the car and take it home. Sometimes you don’t find the animal that needs help, it finds you.  Such is the case of “Jake”, the black lab.

My Fall Photography Collection

I love photography and one of my favorites times of year is fall.  There are so many beautiful colors in the landscape and the air is crisp and cool!  Here are a few pictures I have taken this fall.

Turner Falls Park

This pictures was taken at Turner Falls Park in Davis, Oklahoma.  This is one of my favorite places to go in the fall.  This is a creek that runs through the park and eventually over the falls.

Turner Falls Park

This is actually a small cave opening that is covered in moss, with a little waterfall gently streaming over top.  No, I didn't try to crawl into the cave, who knows what may be in there!

Turner Falls Park

This is the front view of the previous picture.  The little cave is just out of sight to the right. This was such a relaxing place, I could have stayed all day!

Turner Falls

This is Turner Falls. Below the falls is the "swimming hole".  I'm not sure how deep it is, but there are always lots of children swimming.  With the sounds of the waterfall and the beautiful fall colors, this was just a wonderful outing.

8-Point White-Tailed Buck

This beautiful white-tailed buck is running across the meadow on  our place. This meadow is just to the south of our house and I took this pictures off our back porch.

Autumn Leaves

I just loved the color of these leaves. I can't decide if they are copper, gold or orange.

I hope you enjoyed some of my fall pictures. Nature Photography in Your Own Backyard

Monarch Butterfly on Sunflower
Source:  Rockcreek Photography

You don’t have to go far to take great nature photography.  I have found many, many subjects to photograph right in my own backyard. Close to home is the best place to start! Whether you have flowerbeds, trees, bushes or wildflowers. There is still an abundance of subjects to photograph. Look around and just see what catches your eye.

Purple Cone Flower with Bee

One of my favorite things to photograph is flowers. This is a purple cone flower with his little bee buddy. If you have flowers in your yard, even just wild flowers, that is a great place to start taking pictures. Flowers aren't going to run away from you and they are usually in the same place for days or even months. You can take some pictures of them early in the morning, perhaps with some dew on the petals, or in the evening with a warm golden glow.

Bluebird on Plant Stand

Bird are also abundant where ever you may live.  You may have bluebirds, cardinals and chickadees or maybe pigeons, crows and sparrows.  Birds are all beautiful each in their own way. The best time to take pictures of birds is in the early morning hours when they are most active.  You will need to have a little patience and a bird feeder would be helpful. For more tips on taking pictures of birds, see "Backyard Bird Photograpy - Tips for Beginners". If you don't have many birds in your backyard or would like to more of a variety of birds, "How to Attract Birds to Your Backyard" has some really helpful tips.

White tailed buck
One of my all time favorite subject for nature photography is the white tailed around our place. Living on 40 acres in the country, we get a lot deer all year around.  The picture above was taken one fall. I spotted this beautiful boy in the trees, which are a little way behind him, and from watching the deer here, I knew he was going to run across the field.  So I grabbed my camera, quietly stepped out on the porch and pre-focused my camera at least some what to the edge of the tree line and waited for him to come out. As he headed out of the trees, I got him in focus, using the auto focus feature and followed until I got this shot.

Hubby would have like this shot too, but not with a camera!  Yeah, I didn't tell him about the buck until after I took the picture. Besides, he is not "allowed" to shoot any deer on "my" side of the house.  (Don't tell him I said that!)  For more information on taking wildlife photography, you may enjoy, "5 Wildlife Photography Tips for Beginners".
